It is a form of physically condensed, living magic, extracted by force from ponies or other sapient magical creatures. The extraction process is not generally survivable. A single dose can double or even triple a unicorn’s magical potential, but unless it is carefully filtered it can have terrible side effects that endanger both the user and the ponies around them.
