OOC: A little background

In western occultism (and the Greek and Egyptian traditions that influenced it), four things are needed to give a person total control over a dead soul.

  1. The deceased’s full true name.
  2. A likeness of the deceased (a crude carving is enough).
  3. Some sort of divine authority. In Greek necromancy this was obtained through offerings to Hades (traditionally lead tablets carved with prayers that were dropped down wells along with gold), and in later western traditions was gained through prayer.
  4. A specific bone. Traditionally this was the sternum (the ‘heart bone’), but with horse anatomy the rationale makes less sense, so I’ve switched it to the skull for the purposes of this RP.

With the documents NMM hopes to acquire the first needed piece, publicity photos give her the second, and she already possesses the third (being a living goddess and all). Now all she needs is the fourth…

The Documents

Upon returning to the Moon Castle, Nightmare Moon pours over the information Half Past ‘acquired’ from the Royal Guards’ archives. Most of the documents are useless, she knows, but she only needs one fact, one bit of data censored in every publicly released report: The true, full birthname of a certain recently deceased guardspony.
