The problem with https is that it requires a signed certificate from a trusted signer. And those want a serious amount of money for a virtually effortless signing.
I wanted to have https for neighr, but the only option for me would be using a self-signed certificate. Those are in use by a list of sites I frequent, but browsers show a huge warning if the site does not have a fully-trusted certificate. This would convince a large number of users that neighr could be a scam site and then trot off.
((ooc: The best way to handle that is to have an optional link to the https version of the site, with a landing before it switches over that explains to the user about the impending warning.))

Tor’s not failsafe though, even if it is good.
((ooc: If you’re using a secure browser, and have sufficient obfuscating traffic (running a middleman node while you browse is a good way to get this) Tor is totally untraceable.
However, you have to remember that whoever runs the exit gate can snoop on your communications unless they’re encrypted themselves. Using HTTPS Everywhere is a good stopgap, but only if the services you’re using support it. Tumblr, sadly, does not.
Once tcpcrypt becomes a standard (set, supposedly, for sometime this year), this will all be a moot point.))
